What does the app do?

The "twin paradox" scenario arises from the theory of relativity where if one of a pair of twins undertakes a journey at near light speed and then returns, they will have aged less than the twin who stays behind.

The app simulates a relativistic environment by synchronizing the clocks of two observers, one undertaking a round trip while the other remains on Earth. The traveler experiences only a few minutes on their journey, while their stay-at-home sibling may have aged several years by the time they reunite. The discrepancy in their ages becomes evident through various clock readings ranging from seconds to years, contingent on the traveling speed reached during the trip.

• Set your desired travel time by selecting a future date and time as your destination via the orange button or by typing the date in yyyy-mm-dd-hh-ss-mm format.
• Select a future Earth time you wish to arrive at after the designated travel time, ranging from one minute to 10 days.

The app calculates an approximate speed close to the speed of light (c) that the traveler must attain for the simulation.

Remember, "c" represents the speed of light, approximately 300,000 km/s. For instance, 0.9985485c denotes a speed of 299,564 km/s, very near to the speed of light. Most relativistic effects occur between 0.9c and 1c.

Upon setting these parameters, synchronize the clocks of both observers by pressing SYNC and then ACCEL to initiate the simulation. You will observe animations reflecting differing clock times due to relativistic effects and an increase in mass. The distance covered in kilometers is also displayed.

The speedometer at the bottom operates non-linearly. At half capacity, it reaches 0.8c, as most relativity effects become significant beyond 0.9c. The bottom section provides informative messages about ongoing simulation events.

  • The second window creates a visual with yellow poles signifying distance markers akin to traveling along a vast road towards Jupiter's orbit, demonstrating how space curvature affects perception during high-speed travel.
